中国园林能流传至今，其中亦有被列入为世界文化遗产者，自有其在休闲游憩与艺术上之价值；近年来西方世界亦纷纷对于重精神文明的东方文化产生兴趣并展开研究。

Because of the significant contribution in recreation and art, Chinese garden has developed for centuries and some of them have been regarded as the world cultural heritage. Furthermore, the western world is gradually interested in the eastern culture which pay close attention to build a society that is advanced culturally and ethically in recent years.

基于游憩行为的多样性需求，和对祖先遗业传承的使命，本研究乃探讨将传统园林运用为公园时，所能提供之功能及所须面对之课题和可能的对策。

Based on the multiple demands of recreation and the preservation of our heritage, the purpose of this research is to explore the possibility and limitation of applying Chinese traditional garden to modern parks.

由专家访谈得知，欲将传统园林运用为现代公园，将面临公园设计无法确实掌握质量的普遍性课题，以及功能评估、费用考虑、管理维护、整体意象和材料使用等方面的特有课题；

Through consultation with experts, several issues are revealed such as the quality control being a common issue for landscape design, and the budget, the management and maintenance, the overall image, and the material selection being the special topics.

经由案例调查以行为观察法进行调查得知，传统园林供公众使用时可提供26项休闲游憩功能，传统园林的特性致使休闲游憩活动型态偏向静态；

By way of case study, it reveals that Chinese traditional garden may provide 26 items of leisure-recreation functions and most of the garden activities tend to be a gentle model.

为了因应现代公园的需求，各案例都加入了现代化设施物，且均以服务及解说和基础公共设施所占比例较高；部份现代设施物之视觉景观必须妥善处理，以免影响传统园林诗情画意的整体意象；

In order to satisfy the demands of visitors, modern facilities are applied in garden cases. Among these facilities, public services, guide illustrations, and basic constructions occupy a higher percentage. Some modern facilities must be designed deliberately in order not to impact on the esthetic and romantic image of Chinese traditional garden.

经由问卷调查，发现一般游客和具有景观相关专业背景游客，对于传统园林的感知，整体而言并无显著差异，都认为不适合导入较激烈或竞技型活动。

The results of questionnaire survey show that there is no obvious difference in the cognition of Chinese garden between the general tourists and the tourists with landscape related background. It also suggests that the higher intense or competitive activities are not suitable for the Chinese traditional garden.

建议传统园林可配合时代精神，优先考虑导入水塘及亭榭回廊等元素、现代设施物可配合本土材料及现代工法以融入园林中、经由民众参与推动传统园林形式之公园为公共艺术层次。

The research suggests that Chinese traditional garden should be compatible with the contemporary trend. Furthermore, Chinese garden elements such as pond and pavilion, winding corridor should be introduced into practice first. Besides, modern facilities may utilize local materials and modern construction technology to create a sense of Chinese garden. Finally, Chinese traditional garden should be treated as a public art through public participation.
